Abstract:
This subject provides an introduction to the classification, naming, identification and floral biology of plants. Skills in identifying native and exotic species, using conventional and computer-based keys, will be developed. The recognition of plant family characteristics is emphasised.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical aspects of plant taxonomy
- be able to accurately identify native and exotic species using various identification techniques

- Identification methods

- Eucalypt classification
- Floral biology
- Flowering plant and structure
- Floral diagrams and formulae
- Identification of native and exotic plants by use of dichotomous keys
- Use of multi-access keys
- Key construction
- Computer assisted identification
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.
To provide a hands on approach to the theory taught.
