Abstract:

This subject provides the opportunity for specialist study of the production and marketing of a particular horticultural crop (not winegrapes). A market appraisal is undertaken to identify market opportunities and threats. Crop biology, physiology, phenology, culture and climate requirements are reviewed to define alternative production technologies.

The subject concludes with the development of a rationale and plan for the establishment of a horticultural crop and its ongoing management.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to undertake a market appraisal for a horticultural crop
Be able to research the plant structure and physiology, growth cycles and plant-environmental interactions for the crop selected
Be able to develop a site requirements checklist for a horticultural crop
Be able to identify technologies or specialised interventions necessary for the production, processing and/or distribution of a horticultural crop or its by-products, and identify any ethical issues associated with their application
Be able to evaluate alternative development and establishment strategies for a particular horticultural crop
Be able to develop a detailed development and management plan for a selected horticultural crop (from pre-planting to harvest of the first crop).
