Abstract:

This subject entails the study of the production of quality, containerised plants in a nursery environment.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

critically evaluate various nursery production techniques in relation to the appropriate and efficient production of quality containerised plants;
have an appreciation of the following technical processes;
greenhouse structures and environmental modification;
nursery hygiene and its relationship to weed, pest and disease control;
formulation and assessment of containerised growing media;
fertiliser practice; and
irrigation and water management in container nurseries.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

(a) growing media (b) fertiliser practice (c) greenhouses and other structures (d) irrigation and water management (e) nursery hygiene (f) issues of quality (g) nursery management and organisation

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.
