Abstract:
This subject introduces the student to the nature of management practices with an emphasis on the development and practical application of relevant workplace skills-based knowledge. This subject emphasises behavioural dimensions of health services management with attention focused on the functions of decision-making, managing conflict, organisational communication, understanding power relationships, working with and leading groups/teams, managing organisational change and understanding organisational culture.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to:
- appreciate the contribution that knowledge of organisational behaviour and managing change to organisational effectiveness;
- discuss a manager's functional and decision making roles, drawing on a sound conceptual framework to develop managerial skills in areas such as communication and conflict resolution;
- form an understanding of group dynamics and thus develop strategies for effective collaborative and group decision-making in the workplace;
- establish the relationship between planning and control;
- develop an understanding of power and politics and develop strategies for resolving or stimulating stakeholder roles;
- develop an understanding of organisational culture and the theory surrounding organisational change in order to develop workplace and individual strategies to manage these effectively.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- organisational communications: barriers, communication networks, informal/formal communication, interpersonal/organisational communication;
- decision-making: the process of rational decision-making, bounded rationality, satisfying & optimising, groupthink, group characteristics and dynamics and how to conduct effective meetings;
- conflict: functional vs dysfunctional conflict, sources of conflict in health service organisations, process steps in conflict and strategies to either resolve and/or stimulate conflict;
- power & politics: the bases of power, empowerment as influence in organisations, influences in organisations - authority, ideology, expertise, politics, tactics used in organisational politics and stakeholder management;
- organisational culture: the nature and diversity through a diagnosis of organisational culture, culture from the cultural & symbolic frame, and the significance of culture in service organisations and the role of change agents;
- organisational change: the process of organisational change, transactional vs transformational change and leadership styles required.
