Abstract:

The subject focuses on the production and presentation of local histories in Australia and on ways in which histories are appropriated and tailored to the needs of particular audiences. It emphasises European and North American influences on professional historians, archivists and curators, and the vitality of the native Australian antiquarian tradition among custodians of community memory, particularly local museums and historical societies. It gives particular attention to debates on local history's ability to complement national historical narratives.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to critically appraise the diverse historiographical and methodological traditions that underpin the presentation of Australian local histories
- be able to evaluate an Australian local history, its methodology, underlying themes, historiographical context and intended audience
- be able to evaluate how local histories complement or challenge national histories
- be able to identify the contributions of the various methodologies and professional practices and recognise their roles in shaping the presentation of local histories
