This is a study of the nature of historical enquiry and the writing of history. The subject aims to prepare students to undertake independent historical research.

Not available to students who have completed HST-4118. Available only to BA (Hons) students.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the nature of historical enquiry and the writing of history
- be able to undertake independent historical research.

The subject will cover the following topics:
- The history of history - History, science and morality - Historians and their facts - Sources and discourses - Causation in history - Society and the individual - Knowledge and power - Objectivity and its limits - Varieties of history - Conclusion: what is history now?
