Abstract:

This subject introduces students to the Humanities and Social Sciences and outlines relevant career paths for students who study within this field. It explores the history of the Humanities and Social Sciences and its disciplines and relationship to Indigenous Australian peoples post colonisation. Students will be provided with an introduction to sociological theories and qualitative and quantitative research methods and how they apply to the study of society and Indigenous issues.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to

identify different disciplines and relevant careers within the Humanities and Social Sciences
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the history of the Humanities and Social Sciences and the relationship to Indigenous Australians
demonstrate an understanding of sociological theories and how they apply to understanding society and Indigenous issues
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research methodologies in the Humanities and Social Sciences
demonstrate an ability to apply qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and ethical considerations

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

introduction to the Humanities and Social Sciences and its disciplines
relevant career paths for graduates;
the history of the Humanities and Social Sciences and the relationship to Indigenous Australians;
sociological theories including Marxism and Functionalism and how they apply to understanding society and Indigenous issues;
qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
ethical practice in research
