Abstract:
This subject develops students' critical and analytical thinking skills required for university study. It further develops students’ skills in academic writing and in the use of library databases and introduces students to the fundamentals of argument and critical thinking. It will raise students’ confidence as a writer at university by expanding their capacity for managing their learning. This subject will help students to further develop research. This subject will build on the elementary skills developed in IKP101. Students will participate in CSU’s interactive online learning community to enhance their ability as a university student.

This subject is only available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in the Diploma of Indigenous and General Studies
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to:
- demonstrate cognitive and communication skills to identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information from a range of sources
- demonstrate appropriate communication skills to transfer knowledge to others
- transfer and apply technical writing skills in a range of situations
- plan and structure a writing task that presents and supports a point of view based on research
- critically evaluate and analyse evidence
- demonstrate knowledge of appropriate referencing techniques
- demonstrate a working knowledge of the main forms of argument and apply this knowledge to analyse arguments and construct clear and cogent arguments

Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- cognitive and communication skills to identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information from a range of sources
- communication skills to transfer knowledge to others
- technical writing skills for use in a range of communication tasks
- how to plan and structure a writing task that presents and supports a point of view based on research
- how to critically evaluate and analyse evidence
- appropriate referencing techniques for a variety of tasks
- introduction to main forms of argument, how to analyse arguments and construction of clear and cogent arguments
- how to construct an evidence based academic essay
