Abstract:
An Operational Leadership Initiative refers to actions designed to bring about a shift from one leadership approach to another in support of changes that achieve measurable improvement in customer impacting operational performance. This is an applied subject in which students form teams to implement an operational improvement idea, from inception to completion. Teams identify whether the whole process or part will provide a basis for their final outcomes report. The proposed Initiative is endorsed by relevant senior management and an academic support team provides guidance in its development.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Have developed new skills in project work and problem solving relating to operational performance enhancement;
- Be capable of assuming operational ownership of change initiatives in their organisation;
- Be able to initiate relevant self-development behaviour.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
a. To qualify for approval, each project will have: i. an opportunity in their organisation; ii. a team of students who are the "owners" of the opportunity; iii. an organisational sponsor and facilitator who is interested in the outcomes which will be generated by implementing the opportunity; iv. a background of theory and practice which will be used by the team in developing the opportunity operational action plan for that part of the overall process selected. b. Students will be required to prepare a Project Action Plan Proposal and a Project Outcomes Report that records the outcomes and learnings derived from implementing the action plan.
