Abstract:

This subject introduces students to the fundamentals of information and communication technology and provides an overview of the digital environment that we live in. It explains the concepts of 'networks' and 'networking' and the way they are used to provide information services, information exchange and knowledge sharing activities. In particular, the subject explores information and knowledge activities in the digital environment of the world wide web.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- show that they understand the use of information and communication technology in the digital environment;
- be able to function in a computerised environment and keep abreast of current developments;
- demonstrate an understanding of the world wide web as a networking technology, as a provider of information and as a facilitator of knowledge sharing and information exchange;
- be able to recommend information activities in networking; and
- be able to contribute to developments in information and communication technology.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Introduction to IT fundamentals; - The role of computer networking and computer-to-computer communications in a digital environment; - Managing information in exchange - external and internal; - Information service provisions; - Digital environment in the world wide web; - Managing knowledge through computer networking.
