INF305 Professional Activities (8)

CSU Discipline Area: Information Studies (INFST)

Duration: One session

Abstract:

Students are required to attend and report on a minimum of 30 hours of professional activities (such as conference sessions, seminars, workshops) of value to the development of library and information services professionals. Students will reflect in writing on their learning through selected assignments throughout the course, as well as their study visits and placements, and the required hours of professional activities. This subject will be the culmination of the ongoing preparation of a professional portfolio, introduced when they began the course.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- have experienced a range of library and information services professional activities at local, regional, state, national or international level;
- be aware of the value of continuing professional development as a component of professional practice;
- be able to demonstrate their ability to evaluate professional development activities;
- know how to develop, use and evaluate a professional portfolio;
- have developed a professional portfolio that can be carried into their professional lives; and
- be prepared to plan their own career and professional development.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- The nature of professional learning. - The purpose of a professional portfolio. - Guidelines for evaluating professional activities. - Presentation of a portfolio. - Evaluation of a portfolio.
