Abstract:
Students are introduced to the role of the public library in supporting the learning and information needs of children and youth. They are also introduced to strategies for facilitating access to library services and for planning, developing and implementing programs for children and youth. Strategies for marketing and promotion of services catering to children and youth will also be explored and issues which may impact on the effectiveness of services will be examined.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the developmental, informational and recreational needs of children and youth;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of current research into the information seeking behaviour of children and youth and how this can be applied to the delivery of effective public library services;
- be able to demonstrate understanding of a wide range of strategies used to promote the use of materials and resources, and to provide effective services for children and youth in the public library;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues and concerns associated with the selection of materials for children and youth;
- be able to demonstrate their ability to plan, implement, and evaluate programs for children and youth;
- be able to demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the needs of a variety of community and cultural groups, age groups and under-served children and youth in programs and service development; and
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the strategies used in dealing with a variety of challenges in delivering services to children and youth in the public library setting.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- The characteristics of different age groups and their needs
- Overview of public library programs
- Planning and designing programs for children and young adults including those which address special needs and diversity
- Promotion and marketing
