Abstract:

This subject introduces students to information work in libraries and to the underlying philosophy of reference service. It examines the major information sources and services used and developed by librarians to answer information requests. The concept of search strategies is introduced for both electronic and manual searching. The role and dynamics of reference interviews and their role in the larger reference process is studied. A variety of search strategies is examined and evaluated.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to evaluate a range of information resources for the purpose of meeting users' information needs;
- show that they understand and can conduct effective electronic and manual reference queries; and
- demonstrate an understanding of the purpose and role of the reference interview in meeting users' information needs.

- What is an information service? - The reference librarian's role - New dimensions of information work - The reference process: traditional and virtual environments - Reference interview techniques - Information literacy and user education - Standard sources of information used in reference work - Evaluating information and information tools - Searching for information
