INF431 Preservation of Audiovisual Materials (8)

Abstract:

The subject focuses on preservation and conservation requirements for audiovisual materials. Methods for identifying different moving image and sound materials are noted, as are measures for determining deterioration characteristics, both active and passive. A wide range of treatment options including repair, cleaning, and copying are considered. Storage and handling practices such as risk and vault management are also discussed. Ethics, professional practice, handling, occupational health and safety considerations and standards are be integrated into all aspects of the subject.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- explain how and why different audiovisual objects came into being
- distinguish different audiovisual objects from one another
- explain why audiovisual objects deteriorate and be able to recognise the type and extent of deterioration
- undertake a range of conservation treatments
- implement appropriate preservation and storage methods to stop the deterioration from getting worse over time
- undertake all measures explained during the subject in a safe manner.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- audiovisual preservation in context - history and technology of audiovisual objects: film, audio, video - audiovisual media materials - deterioration and treatment of film, audio and magnetic media - preservation issues in the digital domain - storage and security - handling and transportation - disaster preparedness - occupational health and safety.
