Abstract:
This subject explores the ways in which information professionals are called upon to mediate between information seekers and the online environment. It introduces students to the principles of information use, and its structure and retrieval, within the digital information environment. On a practical level, it provides familiarity with a range of online resources and services. Topics covered include database structures, online retrieval systems, virtual reference services, the systems and networks that support online information services, user education and current issues in the online environment.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Be able to evaluate a range of online information resources for the purpose of meeting users' information needs
Be able to explain database structure as the basis for effective information retrieval
Be able to provide an up-to-date description of online information services
Be able to demonstrate familiarity with and some expertise in the use of selected online information systems.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
information resources and services in the online environment; database structure for effective online retrieval; evaluation of online information resources; information systems and networking for effective information retrieval; user education in the online environment.
