INF445 Professional Experience (MLIM) (2)

Abstract:

This subject aims to assist students gain an overview of a library or selected information agency and relate the theory of librarianship to the practical work environment. It also helps in assessing their suitability for the profession and eventual job placement. It consists of three weeks (unless otherwise determined by the subject/course coordinator) practical experience in a given library or other information agency.

Enrolment restrictions:

Available to students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (Library and Information Management) and Master of Applied Science (Library and Information Management) only. Not available to students who have completed INF207 or INF208 or INF403 or INF438 .

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to provide an overview of a library or information agency;
- be able to relate library science and information management theory to practical situations;
- be able to understand and evaluate the role and functions of the library or information agency, the community it serves, and the services it offers;
- be able to understand and evaluate the technical operations and the organisation of the library or information agency;
- be able to write an evaluative report on a particular aspect of the library or information agency's work;
- be able to demonstrate suitability of the student for the profession and eventual job placement.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Three (3) week (unless otherwise determined by the Subject/Course Coordinator) full-time practicum.
