Abstract:
The subject provides an overview of the contexts within which enquiry is undertaken, and introduces candidates to the role and potential of research in information studies. The subject provides grounding in research traditions, paradigms and methodologies relevant to information studies. Candidates study the use of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods and their application to information studies. Candidates will identify a researchable topic and will explore ethical issues related to research.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- demonstrate an understanding of the contexts within which research in information studies is undertaken;
- develop knowledge of qualitative, quantitative and mixed research methods and skills necessary to undertake a research project;
- identify a researchable topic; and
- develop an understanding of research ethics.

- The research process
- Major research paradigms
- Qualitative research approaches
- Quantitative research approaches
- Ethics in professional research
