Abstract:
This subject provides a broad overview of literature and other resources for children and youth from a public librarian's perspective. This subject traces the development of literature and other resources paying particular attention to the technological, cultural and social influences that have shaped this development. A range of genres and formats are explored and attention given to new and emergent trends in reading and engagement with materials and formats. The role that libraries and librarians play in these trends will be discussed. The role of the public library in literacy development and in promoting engagement with reading for pleasure and recreation will also be explored.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify significant historical developments in the production of materials for children and young adults worldwide;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the cultural, creativity and aesthetic values of literature and other resources;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of literacy and the role public library program have in supporting language and literacy development;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of a range of literacies;
- be able to demonstrate a broad knowledge of the literature and resources, authors and creators, genres and formats;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the criteria needed to critically evaluate and select literature and other resources for children and young adults for public library collections;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues and concerns associated with the selection and provision of materials in multiple formats for children and young adults.
