Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- show that they are fully aware of the key components comprising any record keeping and archiving management system;
- be able to determine appropriate practices and procedures for capturing both analogue and digital records;
- show that they are fully aware of the issues, standards and processes involved in acquiring and describing archival records;
- be able to put into practice appropriate policies and standards for the long term care of both analogue and digital collections; and
- be able to put into practice appropriate policies and standards to enable access to records and archives and their disposal.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Aims and characteristics of record keeping systems - Key components of the record keeping infrastructure - The impact of technology; digitisation and digital objects - Appraisal, capture - Description, registration, classification, metadata - Storage, custody, care and handling, preservation - Accessibility - Disposal
