Abstract:
This subject provides a detailed overview of the context and requirements related to four specific groups of record-keeping agencies: government, commercial (business), organisational (non-commercial) and private.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to discuss the legislative and wider social and environmental factors that affect record keeping and archiving;
- show that they understand how these factors, together with stakeholder needs and lines of authority, impact on the policies and practices relevant to particular agencies;
- demonstrate familiarity with the major standards, technologies and systems being adopted both nationally and internationally; and
- demonstrate an understanding of the issues that are faced now and that are likely to arise in the foreseeable future.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Government records and archives - roles, responsibilities, legal framework, services and functions, examples. - Commercial and business records and archives: roles, responsibilities, services and functions, examples - Organisational records and archives: the role of records in the non-commercial sector - Private records and archives: approaches specific to individuals and families, including the issue of digital records and the solutions now emerging (e.g., the BL's Digital Lives project).
