Abstract:
This subject builds on earlier information organisation subjects, providing students with a more in-depth study of information retrieval, including techniques, developments and problems. The subject aims to provide students with a theoretical framework on which to build their practical understanding, and to alert students to the nature of changes and to research in the area, encourage them to evaluate and be critical of existing systems, and provide them with the base knowledge with which to analyse, evaluate or contribute to the development of systems for organising and retrieving information. (Assumed knowledge for this subject is equivalent to that found in INF425 Describing & Analysing Information Resources)

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to comment critically on existing methods of information retrieval;
- be able to explain developments in the ways information professionals provide access to information resources; and
- be able to make an informed contribution to the development of in-house information retrieval resources.

- Information retrieval concepts - Metadata - Information retrieval and the Internet - User-oriented information retrieval - Evaluation of IR systems
