INF553 Research Project in Information Studies (16)

Abstract:

Issues and questions which arise from the candidate's professional practice are identified and provide the basis of the research project. From these an extended project proposal is developed by the candidate. Candidates also complete an ethics approval application (where appropriate) for submitting to the University. Students are then supervised in the development of their research project.

Available only to students in the Master of Applied Science (Library and Information Management). Not available to students enrolled in INF551 and/or INF552 .

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- Be able to articulate the relationship between the candidate's professional work and research;
- Have developed a research project proposal;
- Have developed an ethics application (where appropriate);
- Have produced a literature review in support of their research project proposal;
- Have developed the skills and expertise to undertake research in information studies;
- Have demonstrated an ability to undertake independent research within a selected area of information studies; and
- Have developed report writing skills to a high professional level.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Techniques for examining the dimensions of a research issue - Identifying research opportunities from professional practice - Developing a research proposal - Place of a literature review in the development of a research proposal - Research project management - Ethics in professional research - Developing an ethics application.
