IRR401 Management of Irrigation Systems (8)

CSU Discipline Area: Soil and Water Sciences (SOWAT)

Duration: One session

Abstract:

This subject examines several approaches to irrigation scheduling; evaluation of irrigation methods that suits particular irrigation settings; design, management, and evaluation of irrigation methods and conveyance systems. Drainage and soil salinity. Computer simulation softwares for crop water requirement, irrigation scheduling, and irrigation system (gravity and pressurised) design and evaluation.

It's expected that students will have completed IRR200 or IRR400 before enrolling into this subject. This subject builds on the objectives completed in IRR200 or IRR400.

Continuing students should consult the SAL for current offering details: IRR401

Where differences exist between the Handbook and the SAL, the SAL should be taken as containing the correct subject offering details.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to quantify crop water requirements and schedule irrigation using several approaches;
- be able to describe the diversity of irrigation systems;
- be able to evaluate the appropriateness of the irrigation system to a particular soil-crop-climate combination;
- be able to demonstrate the basics of design, drip, sprinkler, and gravity irrigations;
- be able to evaluate the performance of irrigation systems;
- be able to describe different conveyance structures affecting irrigation performance;
- be able to appraise different flow measuring structures used in channels and pipes;
- be able to outline the characteristics of soils which influence water infiltration and drainage through the soil profile;
- be able to accurately explain the interaction between irrigation in a semi-arid environment, the accumulation of salt and the interaction with groundwater.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:
