Abstract:
This subject discusses the life of the Prophet Muhammad, together with his character, personality, and common misconceptions about his life and work. Various aspects of his life including pre-Islamic Arabia, early life before prophethood, the Meccan period, migration to Medina, social, diplomatic and military challenges, Islam’s domination of Arabia, the family life of the Prophet, his spirituality, his reported miracles, social transformations during his lifetime, and dynamics that were to shape human history will also be addressed.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to articulate the state of pre-Islamic Arabia
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the main events in the life of the Prophet Muhammad and the unfolding of a Muslim community
- be able to analyse social transformations during his lifetime and relate their impact on the Muslim world today
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the family life and spiritual aspects of the Prophet Muhammad
- be able to recognise and analyse common misconceptions about the Prophet Muhammad
- be able to demonstrate independent research, organisation, written and oral communication skills through the presentation of a substantial work
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Arabia pre-Islam
- His childhood and early life
- The birth of Islam
- Propagation of Islam in Mecca and persecution of Muslims
- Economic and social sanctions towards Muslims
- Migration to Medina
- Diplomatic conflict resolutions and inevitable military confrontations
- Treaty of Hudaybiyah and the spread of Islam in Arabia
- Conquest of Mecca and repercussions
- The miracles and future predictions of the Prophet Muhammad
- The spiritual aspect of the Prophet Muhammad
- The character of the Prophet Muhammad
- Family life and the Prophet Muhammad
- Clarifying misconceptions about the Prophet Muhammad
- The death of the Prophet and his legacy
Residential School
This subject contains a optional 2 day residential school.
The residential school is optional.
The purpose of the optional residential school is to provide an opportunity for exploration of the overall coursework covered. In addition to content review, this part of the course aims to facilitate an interactive session between the teaching academics and students.
Students will be involved in small group discussion, lectures, visual presentations and one-on-one sessions with the subject coordinator and lecturers to address any issues that may arise. Material and summary content covered in this session will be a valuable contribution towards the major assessment tasks.
Students unable to attend the optional residential school will be provided with an alternate assessment.
