ISL230 The Sciences Of The Qur'an And Hadith (8)

CSU Discipline Area: Theology (THEOL)

Duration: One session

Abstract:

This subject will cover the most important textual sources of Islam – the Qur’an and hadith – and associated sciences. Since the transmission, understanding and practice of the religion largely relies on these two sources, correct understanding of the Qur’an and authentic transmission of the hadith material have gained great importance in Islamic scholarship. Drawing meanings from the Qur’an, exegesis, has a specific methodology and principles that have been used by numerous scholars of tafsir (exegesis) over the centuries. Similarly, examination, critique and classification of hadith reports have also developed into an elaborate science. This subject will cover in detail the methodology and principles of the two most important sciences in classical Islamic scholarship – usul al tafsir and usul al hadith.
