Abstract:
This subject builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in ISL230. It is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the application of Qur'anic exegetical methodology by studying famous exegetical works. Various passages of the Qur'an with theological, legal and spiritual emphasis will be discussed critically by studying these exegetical works based on tradition (riwayah) and deduction (dirayah). Classical and contemporary interpretations of the Qur'an in the Muslim world will also be discussed.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate a knowlege of the major exegetical types and works
- be able to analyse and evaluate critically Qur'anic exegetical works
- be able to relate critically multiple meanings of Qur'anic text by reference to exegetical works
- be able to demonstrate critical ability to deduct theological, legal and spiritual meanings from the Qur'anic verses by following exegetical methodology
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Revision of Usul al Tafsir (Methodology of Qur'anic exegesis)
- Study of selected Qur'anic passages with theological implications
- Study of selected Qur'anic passages with spiritual implications
- Study of selected Qur'anic passages with legal implications
- Study of Tabari's and Ibn Kathir's tafsirs as narration based exegesis
- Study of Razi's and Zamakhshari's tafsirs as deductive exegesis
- Study of Nursi's, Maududi's and Qutb's tafsirs as examples of contemporary exegesis
Residential School
This subject contains a optional 2 day residential school.
Face to face learning is an important part of learning. While there will be weekly classes available for
students who can attend, the residential school will be an alternative options for students who cannot
attend weekly classes.
