ISL383 Islamic History III: History of Muslim Societies and Civilisations 632-2000 (8)

Abstract:

This subject discusses critically the history of Muslim societies and civilisation from the death of the Prophet Muhammad to the present era. The periods of Rightly Guided Caliphs, the Umayyad Empire, the Abbasid Empire and the Ottoman Empire will be studied, focusing particularly on the historic events and the intellectual, economic, social and cultural aspects of Islamic civilisation. The Muslim contribution to science and human civilisation will be evaluated critically and the decline of the Muslim world, European colonisation and the post colonial era culminating in the present day relationship between the West and the Muslim world will also be discussed.

This subject contains a optional 2 day residential school.

Face to face learning is an important part of learning. While there will be weekly classes available for students who can attend, the residential school will be an alternative options for students who cannot attend weekly classes.
