Abstract:
This subject provides an opportunity for students to undertake a research on Islamic Studies. It comprises of a 12,000 word research project on a topic which has been touched upon by one of the subjects they have studied so far in their Islamic Studies course. The research will advance theoretical and/or practical understanding of the chosen topic.

Assumed Knowledge:
Students will need to have a foundational knowledge in Islamic Studies by completing other subjects on Islamic Studies before attemoting the dissertation.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate a high order of skill in planning and implementing a research project;
- be able to demonstrate a deeper level of knowledge in a particular area of Islamic Studies;
- be able to demonstrate a level of expertise on scholarship that exists in a particular area of Islamic Studies;
- be able to produce a thorough, carefully reasoned report which demonstrates an in-depth understanding of a specific area of knowledge or inquiry; and
- be able to demonstrate effective reference and critical engagement with the relevant literature.

The subject will cover the following topics:
The supervisor will give guidance to the student in the following areas:
- management of a research project
- literature reviews and surveys
- collection and analysis of data
- evaluation and interpretation of analysis
- written presentation of research findings
- professional issues associated with research, including ethics and supervision
- preparation for publishing findings in appropriate journals
