Abstract:
This subject introduces students to the rapidly expanding profession of web site management and publishing. Completion of this subject provides students with working knowledge of the technology used to run web servers and to automate basic processes, especially document delivery. Students set up a working modern web server and implement the essential features of a specific online publishing system. The main topics covered include server provisioning and configuration, automation, document management, site operations, basic management issues, including marketing, basics of e-commerce, and legal matters.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to describe the evolution of publishing, and theory and practice of publishing on the World Wide Web;
- be able to set up, configure and operate a web application on a modern web server and database running on a Unix machine;
- be able to automate a web application on the server using a programming language;
- be able to describe and apply the commercial methods available for cost recovery and profit from information services;
- be able to critically evaluate the ethical, legal, copyright and privacy responsibilities of an electronic publisher;
- be able to apply all of the requirements of sound document design, structure and presentation to the content of a web site.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Overview of publishing on the World Wide Web.
- Process of selecting, installing, configuring and securing a web server.
- Design issues as they relate to site structure information content, information presentation, information delivery and maintenance.
- Legal responsibilities of a site manager including privacy, security, copyright, and how it effects overall publication policy.
- Automation of various aspects of online publishing including server-side programming, database access and indexing using Shell scripts and Ruby programs.
- Use of content management systems (CMS) (like Radiant CMS, Refinery CMS, Lockmotive CMS etc.) as an example of the range of different approaches to online publishing.
- Implementation of automated (where possible) site management procedures for site indexing, access analysis, archiving and mirroring, and monitoring for security and continuity of the site.
- Examination of the various funding models appropriate to commercial web sites, ongoing viability assessment and advertising/promotion of the site.
- Examination of some of the new and promising technologies which will impact upon online publishing in the future.
