Abstract:
The aim of this subject is to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to perform administration tasks in a network operating system environment, specifically with Novell SuSE Linux.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to discuss briefly the history of Linux and current distributions
be able to carry out a Linux system installation;
be able to use the Linux desktop;
be able to locate and use help resource in the Linux system;
be able to administer the system with the management utility;
be able to manage directories and files;
be able to work with the shell and edit text files;
be able to use the command-line interface to administer the system;
be able to understand processes, jobs and runlevels;
be able to manage the network configuration;
be able to manage network services;
be able to manage security;
be able to understand hardware basics.

Linux basics and system installation The Linux desktop Locating and using system help resources Using the management utility Managing directories and files in Linux Working with the shell and editing text files Using the Command-Line Interface to administer the system Processes, jobs and runlevels Managing the network configuration Managing network services: DNS, and file and print services Managing network services: NIS, email, xinetd, ssh, DHCP, httpd Managing security Hardware basics
