ITC557 Web Based Information Systems PG (8)

CSU Discipline Area: Computing (COMPU)

Duration: One session

Abstract:

Web based information systems, such as online databases, Intranet systems and electronic commerce systems, are conceptually different from traditional web sites, which are based on static documents. This subject covers in some detail the process of developing a web based information system, including object modelling, user-interface design, database design and programming. The use of commercial technologies for developing database driven web sites is emphasised.

Enrolment restrictions:

Not available to students who have completed subject ITC357

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to define a web based information system (WBIS), differentiate between such systems and conventional web sites and analyse the appropriateness of each for a given problem;
- be able to contrast the various client-server architectures for web-based information systems;
- be able to use object modelling techniques to describe the structure and information flow of various types of web based information system;
- be able to critically analyse the WBIS design process provided and identify alternative approaches;
- be able to develop a small web based information system using HTML forms, Java Servlets, and session management;
- be able to develop a small database driven web based information system using Java Servlets, Java Server Pages, Java Beans and Microsoft Access;
- be able to explain the server administration and security issues in managing a WBIS and discuss alternative server architectures and alternative approaches to security;
- be able to discuss the emerging role of B2B systems, web services frameworks and XML; and
- be able to critically analyse platforms and tools for developing a WBIS and compare their strengths and weaknesses.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

1.Web based information systems: Examples, applications and architecture 2.HTTP, Forms, Server-Side Programming and CGI 3.Alternatives to CGI: Java Servlets and server APIs 4.Browser detection, state, cookies and redirects 5.Java Server Pages 6.Using Java Beans with Servlets and JSP 7.Designing web systems 8.Database access using Servlets or JSP 9.Displaying Tabular Data using JSP, Beans and JSTL 10.Security of web systems 11.Web services and XML.
