Abstract:

This subject focuses on the role and value of information, information systems and information technology in modern organisations. It provides students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge relating to the planning, implementation and management of systems and technologies and to develop a critical awareness of the need for knowledge workers to be widely informed about technology related issues in their employment.

Available only to students in: Master of Systems Development; Master of Information System Security; Master of Database Design and Management; Master of Management (IT); Not available to students who have completed subject ITC574 .

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to describe the role of IS/IT in organisational activities;
- be able to explain the value of information to an organisation;
discuss the need to monitor and manage the information, information systems and the information technology in an organisation;
- be able to describe the networked organisation and identify benefits accruing from implementing networks;
- be able to define and explain electronic commerce and its infrastructure;
- be able to itemise and describe a variety of critical ICT in modern organisations;
- be able to explain collaborative approaches to work and the technologies that enhance such work;
- be able to articulate reasons for management involvement in planning for IS and IT at all levels across an organisation;
- be able to describe the major ethical and social issues related to the adoption of ICT in modern organisations; and
- be able to identify options for value adding and value-creation via the use of ICT.
