Abstract:
This subject provides an introduction to information and communication technology concepts that underpin the use of information technology in our increasingly complex societies. Key technologies and associated issues are dealt with. It places particular emphasis on how the technology supports information processes so that from the level of an individual to that of a global society, one is able to effectively use that technology.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* be able to explain historical events in the evolution of the Internet and the Web;
* be able to discuss the features and strategies employed in the design of web sites;
* be able to identify and describe common hardware components and their functions;
* be able to discuss the role of a communication network;
* be able to predict the impact of data transmission of a range of media types;
* be able to describe the role and functions of network devices;
* be able to identify data types for a range of purposes;
* be able to select the appropriate data storage media for a given situation;
* be able to describe the impact of various data compression techniques;
* be able to discuss the need to secure data in a variety of contexts;
* be able to discuss legal and ethical issues as they apply to the development of information and software system solutions.
