Abstract:
This subject provides topics relevant to the design and implementation of multimedia / hypermedia systems. It will deal with creation of systems using various technologies which can be used for online systems as well as considering issues for the design and implementation of such systems. The subject will also cover the design of multimedia systems that meet accessibility guidelines and that conform to various legal and ethical requirements.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to describe the characteristics of hypermedia / multimedia systems;
- be able to evaluate and analyse techniques for multimedia design and documentation
- be able to distinguish between online multimedia development/prototyping, evaluation methodology and procedure
- be able to analyse the characteristics of each media type and describe their application and procedure for using on the Internet
- be able to develop interactive Web pages that incorporate a variety of digital media, including text, graphics, animation, video, sound, etc
- be able to edit the different types of media to generate a composite document
- be able to show how to script interactive multimedia clips and identify the various techniques available to do so
- be able to evaluate the protocols, standards and representation techniques appropriate to the storage and transmission of multimedia information
- be able to integrate compliance with legal and ethical requirements in the use and development of multimedia
- be able to describe the current and future trends in online multimedia development
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Industry Standards - MIME types, text & hypertext, sound, animation, video, graphics
- Multimedia concepts : Scripts and storyboards, production tools
- Implementation Issues: interface design, navigation, importing of data, use of graphics, sound and video editors, data compression techniques, optimization procedures, performance issues
- Production methods - authoring, image acquisition, graphic design, scripting methods, compositing, rendering, preparation of all types of documents to include multimedia components
- Applications of Hypermedia/Multimedia: An examination of a range of applications including electronic catalogues, advertising, publishing, reference material, presentation and learning
- Case Studies - examples drawn from current industry practice
