Abstract:
This subject will allow students to undertake a project closely related to an area in which they wish to specialise. Students will be expected to locate, read, critique and synthesise appropriate literature on a research topic within the area of Information Technology. Students will be expected to become very familiar with the literature in their field of research, and to understand the major concepts, issues, problems, theories, and gaps within the field of research. Students will be expected to thoroughly understand the strengths and weaknesses of the methodologies by which knowledge in the field has been acquired. In addition, this subject focuses on the research ethics relevant to the field of their research. By the end of the subject the students should be able to develop a framework of the research project based on relevant literature and appropriate methodology.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate understanding of philosophical assumptions and different underpinning research approaches and strategies;
- be able to demonstrate a solid understanding of the topic of research within the area of Information Technology to be studied and the interrelationship of the topic with others within the field;
- be able to thoroughly analyse and critique a range of controversial issues drawn from the literature of the field of research;
- be able to identify the gaps and directions relevant to their chosen field of research;
- be able to compare and contrast research methods in computing;
- be able to select an appropriate research methodology;
- be able to demonstrate advanced academic writing skills in preparing a research proposal.

- Critically analyzing information sources
- Evaluating the relevant literature
- Identifying a research question
- Ethical issues in the proposed field of study
- Identifying gaps in the literature
- Requirements for academic writing at advanced level
- Advanced research methods and techniques
