Abstract:
The aim of this subject is to give the students the skills and knowledge required to complete the A+ computing essentials industry certification examination developed by the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA). This subject prepares students to enter the IT workforce through the attainment of this entry-level industry certification. It plays a key part in the first phase of the Bachelor of Industry Computing by assisting students to gain key workforce credentials before embarking on the remainder of the program.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to identify types and characteristics of PC components;
be able to install and configure peripheral devices;
be able to identify types and characteristics of portable computers;
be able to install and configure Microsoft Windows;
be able to perform basic PC maintenance and troubleshooting;
be able to describe to fundamental principles of securing IT systems;
be able to describe the principles of effective communication;
be able to install and configure print and imaging devices; and
be able to describe the fundamental principles of implementing LANs and internet access.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Personal Computer Components; Laptop and Portable Devices; Operating Systems; Printers and Scanners; Networks; Security; Safety and Environmental Issues; and Communication and Professionalism.
