Abstract:

This subject is for information systems professionals and database administrators who need to install, administer and support Microsoft SQL server. The subject covers relational as well as security architecture. It also covers installation and upgrading of databases, creating and maintaining databases, integrating databases with other services, using cluster servers and maintaining and fine tuning SQL server. The subject is designed to enable students to appreciate the level of control that database administrators can have over SQL server.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to describe the SQL server architecture;
- be able to plan for a SQL server installation and install an instance of SQL server;
- be able to manage files and databases, including determining resource requirements;
- be able to choose a login security method, configure login security, plan and implement database permissions, and describe how to help protect SQL server in an enterprise network;
- be able to perform and automate administrative tasks and create custom administrative tools;
- be able to back up databases and implement a backup strategy;
- be able to restore databases;
- be able to monitor and optimize SQL server performance;
- be able to transfer and migrate data into databases;
- be able to modify database schema;
- be able to maintain the high availability of SQL server;
- be able to manage linked server;
- be able to enforce and manage security by using stored procedures, triggers, views and user-defined functions; and
- be able to describe how to replicate data from one SQL server to another.
