Abstract:

This subject provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to install and configure a network on stand-alone and client computers that are part of a workgroup or domain. In addition, this subject provides the skills and knowledge necessary to install and configure file, print, and terminal servers.

Available to students enrolled in Master of Networking and Systems Administration, Postgraduate Certificate in Networking and Systems Administration, and Master of Management (Information Technology) only

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to describe the principal features and the basics of networking;

- be able to identify the tools used to perform various administrative tasks;
- be able to describe the features of the common protocols used in the network;
- be able to describe the fundamentals of TCP/IP, including name resolution, routing, and IP addressing-classful versus Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR);
- be able to describe the network communication models used in a network;
- be able to differentiate between the various types of network architectures;
- be able to describe the common physical components used for network communication;
- be able to describe the concepts and protocols for remote access communication;
- be able to describe the client and server technologies used in accessing Web services;
- be able to install or upgrade a network;
- be able to connect clients to a network;
- be able to create and manage user accounts;
- be able to manage access to resources;
- be able to manage data by using the NTFS file system;
- be able to provide network access to file resources;
- be able to monitor and optimize performance;
- be able to configure printing;
