Abstract:
The aim of this subject is to enable students to understand the installation, configuration and maintenance of a mail server. Topics covered include installation methods, upgrading from previous versions and configuring and managing different types of email clients. The subject also teaches students how to connect to other mail server products and details ways of securing a mail server.

Available to students enrolled in Master of Networking and Systems Administration, Postgraduate Certificate in Networking and Systems Administration, and Master of Management (Information Technology) only
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to install a mail server;
- be able to create and manage storage groups, mailbox stores and public folder stores;
- be able to create and manage public folders, users, contacts and distribution lists;
- be able to configure full-text indexing;
- be able to create and apply mailbox store and public folder store policies;
- be able to create a simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) connection to the internet;
- be able to create and connect mail server routing groups;
- be able to configure Microsoft Outlook web access;
- be able to install and configure instant messaging;
- be able to implement and configure mail conferencing server;
- be able to monitor and tune mail server performance; and
- be able to backup and restore a mail server after a disaster.
