Abstract:
This subject continues to develop students' skills in the print area as more complex assignments are undertaken. By the end of the session, students have the professional grounding to have stories published in newspapers and magazines. Students gain experience in sub-editing and feature writing, intercultural communication and international communication as they move towards advanced production areas. They are involved in practical group exercises to produce print publications. Students also continue their investigations in ethical/professional areas.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an ability to write more complex news stories;
- be able to demonstrate an ability to produce feature and story packages;
- be able to demonstrate an ability to write for different audiences in terms of content and style;
- be able to demonstrate an ability to produce newspapers and magazine-type publications;
- be able to demonstrate professional inter-personal and personal presentation skills (for the purposes of interviewing and editorial conferencing);
- be able to demonstrate an ability to work in team productions of print publications;
- be able to demonstrate and apply and understanding of the work of the specialist journalist;
- be able to demonstrate an appreciation of the multi-cultural environment of Australia and its impact on print journalists;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of media law and basic ethical practice as it applies to journalism.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- complex news writing and sub-editing; - introduction to desktop publishing; - specialist journalism; - rounds reporting; - 'colour' writing; - story packaging; - issues of 'sensitivity' and reporting; - inter-personal communication and personal presentation skills; - media law and the basic ethics of professional practice.
