JRN326 Professional Journalism Communication Practice (16)

Abstract:

This subject comprises workshops in professional journalism practice. Students undertake workshops in either radio and television news and current affairs or in newspaper and magazine production. The workshops build on skills and knowledge acquired in JRN324 (Journalism 3) and result in the production and compilation of student portfolios.

Enrolment restrictions:

For students enrolled in the Bachelor of Communication (Journalism), Bachelor of Sports Studies/Bachelor of Communication (Journalism), and Bachelor of Sports Studies/Bachelor of Arts (Communication-Journalism) courses.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate competence in all aspects of the production and presentation of news, feature and current affairs journalism;

- be able to demonstrate an ability to write for and edit story packages to a professional standard;


- be able to demonstrate an ability to work effectively in teams to produce a fully professional news, feature and current affairs stories;

- be able to demonstrate reflective judgement in editorial decision-making, including as it applies to issues of media law, ethical practice and a sensitivity to cross-cultural environments;

- have completed a professional portfolio of their work.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Students will choose either a Print or Broadcast workshop option (equivalent to 16 points). The syllabus will be applied to the specific demands of those respective fields of journalism. For all students, the subject will cover:
- the conceptualisation and production of news, feature and current affairs stories to a professional standard;
- news, feature and current affairs writing and editing;
- media law and basic professional ethics;
- time management skills;
- the development of a portfolio of work;
- establishing a professional network of contacts.
