This subject explores the Australian law and the legal system as they affect the practice of journalism. The subject also examines ethical issues and dilemmas as they affect journalists with reference to codes of ethics, and ethical values and principles.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- - be able to demonstrate an understanding of the regulatory authorities that affect the work of media communicators
- - be able to apply ethical codes, principles and values to media practice.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Journalism and the legal system - Freedom of Information - Media regulation and the role of statutory bodies - Fundamentals of moral philosophy - Journalism ethics and codes - Censorship, conflict of interest, and the social responsibilities of the professional communicator - Legal and ethical issues emerging with new media technologies.
