Abstract:
Students critique existing news coverage in a field of interest, then attempt to address the weaknesses identified in this critique by producing their own story package in print, broadcast or online form. A final paper contrasts and compares the results of this practice-based research.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of existing coverage in terms of story framing, language, and sources
- be able to creatively address those weaknesses in their own coverage
- be able to demonstrate an appreciation of the limitations production processes and considerations of news-worthiness place on coverage
- be able to utilise research and journalism practice to produce a major piece of journalism to a professional standard
- be able to demonstrate advanced skills in investigation, interviewing and writing.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- critiquing contemporary news coverage - the forces that affect coverage - selecting appropriate media for the journalism project
