Abstract:
This subject extends students writing and reporting skills to cover a specialised news "round". Students exercise and develop their skills in news judgement, investigative reporting, feature writing and sub-editing through focused coverage of a chosen field. Students may complete an industry internship as part of this subject, or explore equivalent opportunities for self-publication or freelance reporting.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the need to develop and maintain contacts as part of the newsgathering process
- be able to demonstrate an ability to develop, research and write investigative stories within a specialised news round
- be able to demonstrate a high level of news judgement
- be able to demonstrate skills in sub-editing
- be able to demonstrate skills in feature writing for print media, or the equivalent in other media forms as approved by the subject coordinator
- be able to find an industry placement (voluntary internship) or opportunities for self-publication or freelance reporting.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- establishing and maintaining a news round - investigative journalism - developing and maintaining news contacts - feature writing - sub-editing - opportunities for industry placements, self-publication or freelance reporting.
