Abstract:

This subject introduces students to the fundamentals of interviewing and news reporting practice for print and electronic media. The subject includes an introduction to writing for organisational communication. Knowledge of English usage is developed. Students are encouraged to consider how skills and knowledge from their undergraduate degree and/or work experience may apply to the journalism context.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basics of news reporting practice
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of different newswriting techniques, and have developed an appreciation of various newswriting styles for a range of media
- be able to apply prior knowledge from their undergraduate discipline and/or work experience to the journalism context.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- introductory reporting and news production skills - introductory newswriting skills for print, electronic and online media - interviewing - reporting news conferences, speeches and meetings - writing news releases, and other applications of newswriting in organisational settings.
