Abstract:
This subject equips the student with a foundational understanding of crime, criminology, intelligence analysis and the role of intelligence in the criminal justice system.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Be able to demonstrate understanding of antecedents of crime and criminal behaviour.
Be able to demonstrate understanding of emerging trends in crime and the development of appropriate responses.
Be able to demonstrate understanding of the various stages of the criminal justice system.
Be able to demonstrate understanding of the use of the crime triangle and important crime prevention concepts such as motivation, opportunity and guardianship.
Be able to demonstrate understanding of the intelligence cycle and what each of the steps involves.
Be able to demonstrate understanding of the purpose of intelligence products and the role of intelligence in law enforcement
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
1. Crime and criminal behaviour -Types of crime -Causes of crime -Emerging trends 2. The criminal justice system -Police -Courts -Probation -Prison -Aftercare 3. Responding to crime -Theories of crime control -Environmental criminology and the crime triangle -Intelligence led policing 4 The intelligence cycle -The role of intelligence in preventing and responding to crime.
