CSU Discipline Area: Design and Visual Production (DSVIS)

Abstract:

In this subject, students are required to extend and refine their knowledge of core manufacturing processes, to design and produce more complex settings and advanced approaches to ring construction and related jewellery forms. Students are expected to address more challenging and innovative design problems from initial conceptual stage via CAD to final realisations. In addition, this subject includes an introduction to gemmology as relevant to jewellery manufacture.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate a capacity to design innovative jewellery forms
- be able to demonstrate a capacity to apply innovative design solutions
- be able to demonstrate appropriate mastery in core manufacturing skills
- be able to demonstrate a high level of technical skills in the manufacture of advanced claw settings and rings
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basics of gemmology relevant to the jewellery manufacture

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- establishing the criteria of innovative jewellery design - designing within the parameters of a brief - extending core manufacturing skills - advanced technical elements of the design and manufacture of settings - introduction to gemmology
