LES102 Leisure Programming with Diverse Populations (8)

Abstract:

This subject examines the leisure and health needs of a variety of diverse populations. It introduces students to different types of leisure programming for individuals, groups and communities. Attitudes towards people with disabilities are explored as well as strategies to promote social inclusion through community leisure and recreation participation. The concepts of programming for leisure are introduced at the initial level of planning, implementation and evaluation. The subject is designed to have students become actively involved in programming leisure opportunities for people with specific needs.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- Apply the concepts of diversity, identity and difference to leisure programming contexts.
- Understand how particular groups experience exclusion and social identities become stigmatised.
- Comprehend the meaning of citizenship as an inclusive concept.
- Know the difference between models and theories of disability.
- Understand how important language is to the positive representation of different identities.
- Develop a broad understanding of the different leisure and health issues facing diverse social groups within Australia.
- Understand the connection between the concepts of narrative, leisure and identity transformation.
- Understand the different approaches to leisure programming for individuals, groups and communities.
- Conceptualise the diverse needs of specific population groups through an emphasis on 'person first' programming.
- Appreciate the process of designing appropriate programs to suit the needs of specific client groups and leisure contexts.
- Develop a broad knowledge of the experiences of particular client groups and their legal rights.
- Understand the steps involved in the process of leisure program planning;
- Apply these planning principles to specific leisure programs for diverse population groups;
- Critically analyse the social context that shapes individual leisure choices within the program planning process;
- Plan, design and evaluate hypothetical leisure programs;
- Understand the leisure programming process in relation to the specific requirements of individual, group and community based approaches.
