Abstract:
This subject, which involves work experience, is a core subject in the diversional therapy strand of the Leisure and Health courses. Students will become aware of a range of professional issues that are relevant to the role of diversional therapy as it is practised in a range of contexts. This subject will develop students' understanding of leisure and health issues related to frail and vulnerable individuals and groups in both institutional and community settings. They will also be introduced to a range of professional issues impacting upon the practitioner in residential aged care and other diversional therapy settings in Australia.

This subject is restricted to students studying in the Bachelor of Health Science (Lesiure and Health) and Associate Degree of Health Science (Leisure and Health)courses.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to articulate the key knowledge bases and practice skills that inform the practice of diversional therapy
- be able to demonstrate a capacity to reflectively and critically analyse the contextual and relational elements of diversional therapy practice in community and institutional settings
- be able to demonstrate a capacity to integrate the theory and practice of diversional therapy
- be able to demonstrate knowledge of various resources that can be employed to facilitate participation of older adults and other vulnerable individuals in leisure programs
- be able to articulate the role of diversional therapy in the wider context of the health system
- be able to identify critical issues concerning the differences between institutional and community care
- increase knowledge in key issues in the provision of diversional therapy services in residential aged care
- be able to demonstrate skill in transference of knowledge across groups
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of multi-disciplinarity in health care settings
- have developed develop a range of practice skills related to diversional therapy including assessment, programming, evaluation, leisure counselling, networking, advocacy and team work.
