Abstract:

This subject aims to investigate some of the main perspectives of literary criticism from Aristotle to the present day. It focuses on both the theory of literature and on various critical approaches which analyse the functions of literature.

Enrolment restrictions:

Not for students who have previously completed LIT-4118 Available only to students enrolled in BA(Hons).

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to apply and further investigate the history of literary criticism;
- be able to analyse some of the positions and approaches in the contemporary critical debate;
- understand some of the cultural and critical impacts of these modes of discourse; and
- be able to consider the implications of these theories for the teaching of literature.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

1. "Traditional" literary criticism - Plato, Aristotle, Sidney 2. Neo-Classical and Romantic Critics - Matthew Arnold ...T.S.Eliot; 3. "Contemporary" literary theory - Russian formalism, Marxist critics, structuralist theories, post-structuralism, phenomenology and reception theory, feminist criticism.
